Asian Restaurants with Vegan Options
When it comes to Asian food, there are always lots of vegan options. Milwaukee has its share of Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean and Vietnamese vegan food! If you're not familiar with the restaurant, be sure to check with your server to ensure your selections are vegan--fish sauce and meat-based broths are sometimes used in vegetarian dishes.
Bangkok House - Thai restaurant (my favorite) located in St. Francis in a strip mall, but don't let that fool you. They have great food and a separate section of the menu for vegetarian items. Be sure to ask for no fish sauce.
EE Sane - Many people feel this is the best thai food in Milwaukee. Many of their standard dishes can be made vegan with tofu. You can see a copy of their menu here.
Thai-Namite - A Thai/Sushi place on that also offers delivery and take-out. If you order Thai, be sure to ask for no fish sauce and be clear that you are vegan. They have several vegan options, but clarify with your server if you have any questions. There are also locations in Wauwatosa and The Milwaukee Public Market.
Elephant Cafe - A Thai and Laotian cafe on the East Side of Milwaukee with several vegan options. Be sure to ask for no fish sauce.
Hue Vietnamese Cuisine - Locations in both Bay View and now Wauwatosa neighborhoods, Hue has several vegan options. Ask your server to point out the vegan choices. They have a vegan Pho and they have "veggie meat" that's delicious and strangely realistic.
Screaming Tuna - A Japanese restaurant located in the 3rd Ward area on the river--most of the vegetarian items can be made vegan by request. My favorite place for sushi!
Dan Dan - New in 2016, they are located on Erie street near MIAD. They do American-type gourmet Chinese dishes and offer several vegan options including vegan cheesecake for dessert. Their lunch menu is a bit more limited, but still offers solid choices. All vegan items are clearly marked on the menu.
Buddha Lounge - Located on North Avenue on the East Side, this restaurant offers a variety of dishes, with a few things specifically marked vegan.
Appe Thai - A Thai food restaurant in Brown Deer--they mark all the dishes that can be made vegetarian. Just remember to ask about egg or dairy and request no fish sauce.
Singha Thai - Located on Highway 100, this is another fantastic Thai restaurant in our area. Lots of veggie options with tofu. Ask for no fish sauce when ordering.
Pacific Produce, Bánh Mì Nhu Ý (Vietnamese) - A huge Asian grocery store and restaurant(s) located in Greenfield on 27th Street.
P.F. Changs - Yep, we've got one of these--it's a chain, but the food is good and they have several dishes marked as vegetarian which are also vegan.
Mekong Cafe - They are located on North Avenue near Wauwatosa. They offer several veggie asian dishes. I haven't been there yet, but it looks like they have some great options!
FreshFinPoke - They are located on the east side on North Avenue. They specialize in poke bowls and offer one "Vegan Poke Bowl" with shiitake, sweet potato, avocado and more. Or, you can build your own!
Rice N Roll - They are located on Farwell Avenue on the east side and offer lots of vegan sushi/maki rolls as well as entrees marked "vegetarian." Check with your server to identify all the vegan options. I've heard from others that their curries have fish sauce and that they cannot be made vegan.
Izumi's - Japanese restaurant with excellent veggie Maki. I like the caterpillar maki. Last I checked, they were the only place for vegan miso soup. Double check with your server!
Kiku - Japanese restaurant downtown that has several veggie maki options, as well as other dinner options.
Kyoto - Japanese restaurant located on 76th and Layton in Greendale near Southridge Mall. Nice atmosphere, good veggie maki selection and excellent presentation. I also got to try "frushi" here (fruit sushi) which was fantastic.
bd's Mongolian Grill - A create-your-own-stirfry place that has tons of veggies, tofu, and vegan sauces. See their site for nutritional info.
Stir Crazy - Create your own stir-fry at this chain restaurant in Brookfield. Ask your server to point out which options already marked "vegetarian" are also vegan.
Stone Bowl - This Korean restaurant on the east side specialized in bibimbap. I heard rumors that they have vegan options--check with your server to confirm.
Jing's - Located in the third ward area, Jings is a Chinese restaurant with some tasty vegan options. The Kung-Pao tofu is a must!
The King & I - A Thai food restaurant in the downtown area, a perfect place to walk to before catching a show at one of the many awesome theaters in Milwaukee. They have a separate vegetarian section to the menu, but remember to ask for "no fish sauce."
Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ - I haven't been here in over 10 years, but their website shows several vegetarian options that may be vegan--ask your server to be sure.
Xankia - Some people say this is the best place to get an authentic banh mi sandwich (with tofu). The only drawback is you have to ask for it without the mayo (maybe take it home and add your own?). They offer some other tofu dishes and spring rolls as well--ask when you order to be sure it's vegan.
Tangled Noodles - Located near Marquette University, you can order online for delivery or takeout of great noodle dishes.
Japanica - Located in Greenfield near Southridge Mall, this Japanese restaurant has vegan sushi options.
Siam Thai - A Thai restaurant offering tofu as an option in many dishes. Remember to ask for no fish sauce!
