American or Mixed Cuisines - Vegan-friendly Restaurants
There are so many restaurants serving american-style vegan food in the Milwaukee area!
Comet Cafe - East side restaurant and bar serving a mix of meaty foods and vegan/vegetarian offerings. Fantastic vegan hazelnut burger, gyro, reuben and many tasty brunch options. Regularly features a selection of vegan desserts, baked at their sister restaurant, Honeypie. Breakfast available daily until 3pm; expanded brunch menu on weekends.
Palomino - Bar and restaurant with a southern feel. They serve usually up until 11pm and have a small selection of vegan options at both brunch and dinner. Vegan fried pickles are amazing! I also recommend the black-eyed pea falafel and the vegan wings.
Beans & Barley - A long-time east side staple in Milwaukee, this restaurant & adjoining market has been well-loved by vegetarians for years. Featuring vegan sandwiches, burritos & fajitas, salads & chili, smoothies, and juices. Beans offers a delicious array of vegan soups, a great selection of vegan desserts (the peanut butter chocolate cake is not to be missed), and a really nice breakfast menu. Breakfast available until 11am weekdays; until 2pm (expanded menu) weekends.
Grassroots - New in 2016, they are located in Brookfield Square and offer salads, wraps and juices with lots of vegan options.
Honeypie - Bay View restaurant featuring from-scratch menu items and locally-sourced ingredients. Loads of vegan dessert options (the baked goods you enjoy at Comet are all “born” here!), and a few vegan sandwiches. On weekends, try the veganized breakfast burrito for a new twist on an old favorite. Breakfast available daily until 3pm; expanded brunch menu on weekends.
Cafe Lulu - Located at the intersection of KK and Lincoln in the Bay View neighborhood, Lulu's offers a few vegan items including salads (omit cheese) and my favorite the Hummus pita with tomato and kalamatas. Also, their signature Asian Slaw is vegan and amazingly delicious!
Juniper61 - Located in Wauwatosa, this is the sister restaurant to Cafe Lulu (in Bay View). They have all the vegan items marked on the menu and have some really creative flavors. There aren't a ton of options, but what they have is delicious. No brunch items that I can see on the menu.
Tricklebee Cafe - A "pay-what-you-can community café centered on joy, sustainable/healthy eating, & spiritual renewal." Their menu changes regularly, but it looks like mostly everything they offer is vegan and quite a few gluten free options as well. They are located on North Avenue in the Riverwest area.
Maxie's Southern Comfort - Features low-country creole and cajun foods. They have a separate vegetarian section to their menu featuring veggie jambalaya, tofu sandwiches and more. Ask your server how to make these vegan.
Hamburger Mary's - They have a vegan black bean burger here, plus they do fun bingo nights for various fundraisers! Make sure to ask about the bun--it might not be vegan.
Goodkind - New to the Bay View neighborhood in 2014, this restaurant has already become a favorite to many restaurant reviewers. As of right now I haven't eaten there yet, but they usually have at least one vegan entree every day and they serve food until 1am!
Lazy Susan - Another newer slow-food restaurant in Bay View specializing in small plates offers at least one vegan entree daily with a constantly changing menu. Offers dinner and Sunday brunch.
Company Brewing - Located in the Riverwest area, they have a few fancy vegan dinner and brunch options. They also brew beer and have a full bar. Music shows are offered multiple times per week.
Cafe Centraal - A large Bay View establishment with a huge beer selection and a few vegan options. The vegan items are always clearly marked, but change seasonally. Ask the wait staff to clarify. Avoid the veggie burger (has dairy in it).
Dog Haus - With five locations in the city, a fantastic Chicago style vegan hot dog is never too far away!
Dr. Dawg - A restaurant dedicated to hot dogs a location in Glendale. They offer two types of Field Roast brand vegan sausages served with caramelized onions or other chicago style toppings on a poppy seed bun. They also offer the Field Roast veggie burger.
Outpost "Fork in the Road" Cafe - These are small cafes located within the three different Outpost Co-op Natural Foods grocery stores. They offer a couple vegan options and it's worth a visit just for the Joey's Tofu Steak Sandwich.
Cafe Manna - See listing under All Vegetarian Restaurants
Tom + Chee - This is a grilled cheese and tomato soup chain restaurant that offers vegan grilled cheese and tomato soup! They are located in Elm Grove off of Bluemound Road. Here's a direct link to their allergen listing so you can see exactly which items are vegan. TIP: Be sure to ask for vegetable oil instead of butter when they cook it!
AJ Bombers - A famous burger joint in Milwaukee on Water Street. They have a vegan black bean burger option as well. Oh, and peanuts...lots of peanuts.
Stack'd - Located in the 5th Ward, they offer a full bar along with a full kitchen serving several vegan options including a black bean burger and portabella stack. They offer some vegan cheese and mayo toppings. Vegan items are marked clearly on the menu.
Hi Fi Cafe - Coffee shop and cafe in the Bay View neighborhood offering vegan chili, falafel, and some sandwiches that can be modified to be made vegan.
The Green Kitchen - Located in the Milwaukee Public Market near downtown, they offer a make-your-own salad option, freshly made juices, two vegan sandwiches and two vegan wraps. I go here for lunch all the time--all the choices are delicious.
The National - A cafe serving brunch and lunch. Several vegan options for each meal and a nice atmosphere.
Odd Duck - This farm-to-table restaurant opened in Bay View in April 2012. Although there aren't tons of vegan selections, what they do have is extremely flavorful and delicious. They also have very creative drinks, if you're so inclined.
Wolf Peach - A fancy place to go where you can share flavorful small plates with friends. The menu is always changing, but they always offer several incredible vegan options.
Fuel Cafe (Riverwest) - Cool coffeehouse where none of the furniture or the dishes match, but there is always good art on the walls. They have a few vegan lunch options, and a fantastic vegan chili served only on the weekends.
Fuel Cafe (Walker's Point) - New in 2017, this location of Fuel Cafe has a whole different menu, but still offers several vegan options from breakfast (avocado toast) through dinner (vegan "lobster roll").
Refuge Cafe - Boasting healthy food, they have several locations including several downtown and one in Bay View. They offer several fresh juices and some smoothies that may be able to be made vegan. They have one vegetarian wrap that potentially could be vegan without cheese and a stuffed pepper/avocado with quinoa that appears to be vegan. Ask your server for details!
Riverwest Co-op Cafe - See listing under All Vegetarian Restaurants.
Bounce Milwaukee - Looking to take the kids for a day of fun with bounce houses, laser tag, wall climbing, video games and more? Or maybe you want to have some fun yourself and have some food and drinks while you're at it? Bounce Milwaukee has vegan food options--you can get Daiya cheese on pizza (love the DaVinci pizza), get awesome tater tots or even a hummus wrap.
County Clare - This Milwaukee Irish Inn and restaurant has been in business for years--they have a restaurant, pub, B&B and they also offer tours in Ireland (which I did back in 2004). They have a completely separate vegetarian menu now, with some options available vegan.
Fresh Cafe and Juice Bar - Located in Mequon, this cafe has many healthy vegan and raw options available. It appears they also sell fruit bouquets and centerpieces, but I didn't see details on the site aside from beautiful images. Update Dec 2011--the website URL doesn't seem to be working, so I linked to an article about the restaurant. They are still open.
Ambrosia Juice Co. - Located in Kenosha, this restaurant specializes in fresh juices and smoothies and also offers a few vegan food options.
Good Harvest Market Cafe - This is a cafe located within the Good Harvest Market in Pewaukee, WI. The cafè has multiple vegan options, including the popular "Very Vegan" sandwich, as well as vegan hot bar/salad bar options during the week.
Vanguard - Located in Bay View, this bar offers counter service dedicated to house-made sausages. If you can get past all the meaty options, you'll find a whole page of vegan menu options from sausage and burgers to their spectacular tofu!
Urban Beets Cafe and Juicery - Opened in early 2016, this cafe offers an ALL-VEGAN menu with many gluten-free options. Check out the sandwiches, fresh juices and smoothies. I was amazed by their avocado reuben!
Colour Palate - Hand-crafted salads, soups and breads. Located downtown on Water street. Several vegan options marked on the menu. Tempeh and Gardein proteins available.
Safehouse - Milwaukee's spy-themed bar and restaurant. Lots of great drinks and they do offer a vegan "Smersh" burger as an option at their restaurant. Take time to look around if you've never been there. And, if you don't know the password, prepare to work hard for your entry. ;)
Ugly's - A downtown bar and pub that carries a vegan burger that's labeled as vegan in the menu. I haven't tried it yet and I'm not sure about any other menu items, but it's a start!
