It's time to start planning for Thanksgiving again and there's one place where you can eat everything on the menu: the M.A.R.V. Vegan Thanksgiving event! (That's the Milwaukee Area Resources for Vegetarianism.) This has been one of those events I never miss. I think it's my love of a good buffet and the fact that regular Thanksgiving with my family is never the vegan extravaganza I'd like it to be.
This year's event is at Wil-O-Way Underwood park in Wauwatosa. This is a really nice facility--they try to move the location every year to make sure to hit different sides of town. It's always the weekend before Thanksgiving, so this year that's Saturday November 19th.
Here's how it works: If you plan to bring a dish to pass, adults pay $7 and children 5-12yrs pay $3. If you choose not to bring a dish, tickets are $13 for adults and $6 for children. You need to RSVP by printing out this form and sending it in. The organizers will call you to ensure that the dish you're bringing is indeed vegan.
The night of the event, arrive early. It opens at 5pm and dinner starts at 5:30pm. It goes first-come, first-served. Everyone receives a colored ticket and they call out the colors in order of arrival to get in line for the buffet. M.A.R.V. provides Simple Soyman tofurkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and usually chili as well. As if that's not enough, next you'll move on to a huge buffet of all the great entrees brought in by all the guests, from salads, side dishes, main dishes and desserts.
A lot of people attend this event--I'm always surprised by how many there are and how many I've never met! The other good thing about the large number of attendees is that you get to try tons of different vegan dishes. It's a great event to bring a non-veg friend or family member to--I like to bring my mom and she has never been disappointed. Since it's such a big event, it works well for people who want to meet others or people who'd prefer to disappear into the crowd.
If you'd like to attend, make sure to RSVP soon. Or, if you have any questions, you can call a M.A.R.V. representative at 414-962-2703.
Hope to see you there!
