Now, on to the topic at hand....The next Milwaukee Vegan Bake Sale is Saturday May 11th from 10am to 4pm at the Riverside location of the Urban Ecology Center. You can find lots of details at the Milwaukee Vegan Bake Sale website, as well as the Facebook event. There will be tons of great bakery items including cupcakes, cookies, cheesecakes and even dog treats! From Steph, the organizer: " Proceeds will be split 50/50 between Urban Ecology Center and Milwaukee's Safe Haven Program, a partnership between the Wisconsin Humane Society and Sojourner Family Peace Center offering up to 60 days of shelter for companion animals of domestic violence victims." Great treats for an even greater cause! Stock up for Mother's Day celebrations or to keep all to yourself :) See you there!!
When: Monday April 8, 2013 - 7PM
Where: For Milwaukee Residents - Nathan Hale High School, 11601 W. LincolnAve. West Allis, WI Outside of Milwaukee County? Find your election info here. Additional Details: Go to the Facebook Event From Barb Eisenberg (the delegate you should vote for): "Please share this event with friends and like-minded groups. It has been going on for 75 years, but most people are unaware or think it belongs to hunters, trappers and anglers. This election belongs to ALL of us. I've been attending for 13 years and served as a delegate from 2005-8. I am running for a delegate position again to be a voice for the hikers, bikers, bird watchers, canoeists, campers and other non-consumptive users of our public lands. It is also important to have input from biologists outside the DNR. Last year I lost by about 6 votes, so every vote is really important. Thanks to everyone who is already planning to go!"
Some important issues are as follows: Question # 68 Would you favor legislation to prohibit the use of dogs to hunt & training dogs to hunt wolves? Question #70 Expanding hunting & trapping in state parks from 2 to 7 months? Right now dogs are run to kill coyotes 24/7 year-round. All wildlife is hounded.See the entire Spring Questionnaire here. From Patricia Randolph, wildlife activistAlthough only 5,000 avid hunters and trappers have attended, statewide, the past decade, on average, the 90 proposals they make every year ( for 80 years running) to their advantage against the rest of the public interest - are paraded before the legislature as the "public will". That charade has been enabled partially by calling the election , a " spring hearings". Non-hunters tend to come out when an ISSUE upsets them ( mourning doves, feral cats, cranes) - but it is not an issue-driven process - all the power is in electing 2 of 5 delegates every year.Privately hunters and trappers call it " the most important election in the state". Of course it is. It is the generator of policies that govern our 7 and a half million acres of publicly purchased billions of dollars of citizen investment. It is the forum for stewarding our water, habitats, air, toxins, climate change, and the welfare of our besieged wildlife. It should be about so much more than killing more and more species in more and more ways, with more and more weapons, now prioritized on ALL our public lands. The health of all that is real depends on a diversity of interests being represented every year. I have not missed one election since I looked for the center of power in 1997. I was elected the first delegate ever to represent living wildlife and a wildlife loving general public in 1999 in Dane County. The first and only in then 65 years of hunter total control. I served on the Trapping Committee. If you want PTSD, serve on the trapping committee. Over a million innocent wild animals are mangled and die slowly or are bludgeoned to death in traps, snares and conibear traps, annually, raping out what is ideal habitat for a rich diversity of life. Why should a new trapper ( they are recruiting ) be able to pay $4 and kill as many animals as he can trap - hundreds a week - for 6 months for private profit as a business off of our public lands? I cannot pay $4 and go into our public lands and take out one animal to save him or her. Why should a new deer hunter be able to pay $5 and kill several deer or fawns, and remove them dead forever from our commons, and I cannot pay $5 and save any animal, to live out a life, even if the mother is killed in the road. Even if they live on my private property. Even if they are tamed by circumstance of being orphaned. The underlying fundamental lack of democracy lies in a state agency funded by killing licenses instead of general public funds. It is undemocratic and corrupt to the core. It is set against the rest of the public, protecting killing, not protecting intact natural systems. Please join us at Wisconsin Wildlife Ethic - Vote Our Wildlife ( www.wiwildlifeethic.org) to grow a movement to claim a first time democracy to protect our state which is being raped out. We must organize politically to go up against the very organized NRA, Farm Bureau, Safari International and the very organized Wisconsin Wildlife Federation ( see their affiliates here: http://www.wiwf.org/affiliate-clubs.php when you scroll down). All of the power is in attending every year to elect two candidates that represent protecting our wildlife and ecosystems. 80 years of one special interest has done a lot of damage. All of the power is in electing two delegates of five in every county. Delegates design these questions very narrowly to their advantage. When you vote against expanding trapping & hunting in state parks, you vote for 2 months of trapping and hunting, the way the question is written. It is usually do you want to kill more or more than that? It should not be all about killing. We are late into the devastation of our planet. http://dnr.wi.gov/About/WCC/springhearing.htmlPatricia Randolph State Journalist Madravenspeak living wildlife column every other Sunday Capital Times online newspaper www.wiwildlifeethic.org Now, get out there and make a difference!

Those of you from the area may know Wisconsin Dells as the sometimes cheesy, sometimes beautiful and always interesting waterpark capitol of the world. Several years ago my family started doing group trips to The Dells and as we planned the first event I dreaded eating horrible food for the entire trip. I knew I couldn't go to all the steak houses, pizza joints, ice cream parlors and especially not Paul Bunyan's Cook Shanty (a family favorite, probably because of the unlimited donuts and meat). Luckily, I did my research and found that I could eat some fantastic vegan food during my stay! Now I like to visit The Dells every year or so to soak up the (vegan) cheesiness and enjoy the natural beauty. The first stop on my most recent trip was to the International Crane Foundation. From their mission statement: " The International Crane Foundation (ICF) works worldwide to conserve cranes and the ecosystems, watersheds and flyways on which they depend. ICF is dedicated to providing experience, knowledge, and inspiration to involve people in resolving threats to these ecosystems." They care for a collection of cranes from around the world (usually two of each) and are working to expand the population as well as work with the communities where the cranes live to help make them more hospitable. Another fun vegan-related stop was to Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac--this is just about 30-40 minutes outside of The Dells, but totally worth it. The vineyards and the buildings were beautiful and the people there were extremely nice. This was the first time I visited a winery (I feel so grown up!), but they answered our novice questions and we got to try almost all of their wines. Since it was the off-season, we got to go on a tour all by ourselves! Now, I saw on Barnivore.com that all their wines were vegan, but I also confirmed this with a member of the staff. Guess what else? All their wines are delicious--I bought six bottles! Another gorgeous place to visit is Mirror Lake State Park. This park is very close to Wisconsin Dells, approximately 15-30 minutes away. During the warmer season you can rent boats or canoes and enjoy the scenery from the water. On our trip, we stuck to the trails (there are many) and felt like we were the only ones there! If you made it this far, I bet you're wondering...so, where's the vegan food you promised? Well, here it is! My favorite place for vegan vittles in Wisconsin Dells is the all-vegetarian place called The Cheese Factory Restaurant. Don't confuse this with the Cheesecake Factory...it's way different. Yes, they have cheese and dairy ice cream, but they also offer a separate vegan menu with a wide variety of options ranging from salads and sandwiches to mexican, thai, middle eastern and other ethnic offerings. They also have specialty vegan coffee drinks made with soy milk--I had the Black Forest Cafe. Wow. It was amazing. It came with a cute little vegan cookie too :) My boyfriend and I started off with the Rattlesnake Tofu--seasoned charbroiled tofu with BBQ and black beans--very tasty! My first entree there was the Chimichanga. Who remembers Chi Chi's back in the day? Well, it has been a long time since I had a Chimichanga, but this one was outstanding! Filled with rice, onions, and chicken flavored (all veg) tofu, they covered it with this amazing Romesco sauce that I could eat by the spoonful! Of course, the food was so good that we had to visit again. So...my second meal was the Veggie Boat--"Toasted multi-grain flatbread filled with grilled veggies, marinated tofu, smoked almonds and romesco sauce." I was looking for something a little healthier, but still filling. When I looked at the pita I thought, "OK, it's a pita with some veggies and tofu...probably going to be boring." I was totally wrong--the flavors were incredible. I think I tasted some rosemary in there, but otherwise it was hard to say exactly how it was seasoned. The vegetables were so tasty and the tofu done just right. I finished the whole thing so fast, I think I surprised the waiter! P.S. Those fries were the best I've had in as long as I can remember! My boyfriend has been trying to stick to a mostly vegetarian diet these days and he loved this place. The first night he had Hungarian Goulash with served with pierogis and sauerkraut. He really enjoyed that. On the second visit he had The Big Cheese grilled cheese sandwich apparently made famous by Rachael Ray as noted in the menu. He said this was the best grilled cheese he'd had in a long time. So, I think everyone could find something enjoyable here, even if they're not vegetarian. We cooked a few things from our condo we rented (thanks, Groupon!), so our third and last meal was Chinese food from Dynasty Restaurant & Lounge. This is a huge Chinese restaurant with a menu to match. There is a "Vegetable" section with several options with or without tofu. I had the Crispy Tofu and it was very good. It came with white rice (not pictured) and was very flavorful! You see? There's no reason to avoid Wisconsin Dells if you're vegan. There are lots of options including the ones listed here, but also you'll find at least one Sushi place and Subway and some nice grocery stores where you can get supplies to make your own fancy dinner. I'll leave you with one last photo of this beautiful girl I saw on our Ducks tour. :-)

I really wanted to take a relaxing vacation somewhere warm (I was planning this last winter), but so many tropical places left much to be desired when it came to vegan food. I wanted somewhere I could enjoy myself and not have to rent a car and drive miles to get to a good restaurant. The solution was simple: Key West, Florida. I've been there three times now and I still love it! The island is so small that all you need to do is rent a bike and you can really get wherever you want. And, get this--there are tons of places with great vegan food and even a natural grocery store where you can stock up on vegan ingredients and make your own!
I love seeing the chickens, cats (in this case, polydactyl cats with 26 toes on the Hemingway estate), and iguanas just hanging out with no one bothering them. We can all co-exist!
Even though Blue Heaven doesn't have much in the way of vegan food, we had to go there for brunch just for the atmosphere. Seating was outside, of course, and chickens weaved their way through tables and chairs to pick through any dropped food. There was a nice little bar, ping pong table and area for kids to hang out. There was also a little chicken cemetery (bottom right photo) to pay respects to those resident chickens that have passed (naturally). For brunch I had the granola with soy milk and fresh fruit. I also had a side of breakfast potatoes cooked only in oil (they knew what vegan was...yay!) and spices and they were very tasty! They do have a few more options for dinner including black bean soup, vegetables/beans/rice and a vegetable stir fry. I would say this place is a must-see when you're in Key West. These are the gnocchi cakes from Willie T's. English was a second language for our waitress, so I was hoping for the best on this one. They originally had parmesan cheese, but she told the chef to make it vegan. I can't tell you how delicious these were--probably the best part was the fact that the spinach and sun-dried tomatoes were sauteed in garlic. Willie T's also offers a delicious vegan burger. The folks at Finnegan's Wake were really nice and understood vegan food as well. They even have a separate vegetarian menu and can work with you to make sure your selection is vegan. We had an appetizer of olive tapanade with tasty bread. Now, I know that other picture looks like I barfed on my plate, but trust me--this was their peanut noodle special that night and it was delicious and very filling! The Cafe is what you would call a pescatarian restaurant. It's mostly vegetarian, with some seafood options and lots of delicious vegan options. We ate here twice--and I could have eaten here probably every day. The first visit I had the handmade seitan peppersteak without the cheese. It was amazing and that bean salad served with it was so good that my boyfriend just had to have some and we managed to eat every last bean! The next visit I had the falafel sandwich with sweet potato fries--so tasty and unbelievably filling. When I saw they had vegan chocolate chip cookies, I had to get one (as big as my head!) to go for a snack the next morning. Sugar Apple is a small cafe within a natural foods store, but don't let that fool you--we had some amazing food there! My boyfriend ordered the tofu in pesto rice and I was a little worried that he wouldn't like it since he's picky on how his tofu is prepared (still a little new to it). Well, no need to worry because this dish was outstanding! He said it was probably the best thing he ate on the whole vacation. I stole some of it, but secretly wanted to come back and order it all for myself! I had the grilled tofu sandwich that was also fantastic and our side salads were very fresh with flavorful dressings. We looked around in the store a bit and spoke to the people that worked there who were so friendly. You could definitely stock up on your vegan foods here and prepare a great meal if you had a kitchen where you were staying. We just got some chocolate chip cookies to go (again!) and enjoyed them thoroughly :) One night we had an early dinner after parasailing and decided to go for Thai food at the aptly named " Thai Cuisine." Since it was early, they had deals on appetizers, so we got both vegetable spring rolls and fried tofu with peanut sauce. Then, we had miso soup before our entree (which I was told was vegan) and then the Spicy Basil with tofu (no fish sauce). Even though the menu doesn't say it, you can pretty much get tofu as your "meat" in any dish. They also offer sushi, including several vegan roll options. On our last day there we went to check out Bad Boy Burrito, another tiny place that has amazing food. You can see from the menu above that you can pick your veggie fillings of choice including tofu, zucchini/squash, spinach or mushrooms and then other toppings as well. They also offered fresh juices and smoothies. I chose tofu, pico, pickled red onion, cilantro, and cabbage. Everything was so delicious and the people were so nice. They only take cash and we didn't have enough to pay, but they let us eat before we tracked down an ATM to get some more money. They only have a few benches, so it's definitely not a sit-down place, but maybe something that you could pick up and take with you to the beach. When we were walking around on our last day before our 5:30pm flight, we ran across Panini Panini on Duval Street. Although I was stuffed from our burritos, I got a refreshing berry smoothie and noticed they had some vegan options as well including the Grilled Vegetable Panini and a few others that can be modified to be vegan. They said the sun-dried tomato pesto was vegan and very good. They also sold Alternative Baking Company vegan cookies! Finally, on the plane ride home we got Biscoff cookies--yum! This is a shout-out to all my Biscoff-spread loving friends :)
Overall, I'd recommend Key West as a relaxing, fun, quirky vacation destination where you can be guaranteed you won't go hungry!
